Chamomile Heading

Chamomile is a powerful plant boasting a range of health benefits. Its wonderful properties can be enjoyed in several forms including essential oils, plant extracts or even in tea infusion.

Chamomile has been used around the world for centuries. The ancient Egyptians would use the herb for medicinal purposes such as treating fevers and the Egyptian women are said to of used crushed Chamomile flowers as a cosmetic to preserve their youth. Chamomile oil was also used in the embalming of dead pharaohs.

Harvesting and Distillation

The Chamomile crop must be harvested at the precise time that it contains the highest yield of essential oil, this normally takes place during late June and July. The small daisy-like flower heads are cut, after cutting the crop is allowed to dry in the sun for a short while before being steam distilled to extract the beautiful fragrant essential oil.

The Different Types of Chamomile

There are several varieties of Chamomile, but the varieties most used in skincare are Roman Chamomile and German Chamomile. They are different in appearance and their medicinal properties overlap to a large extent.

German Chamomile Essential oil smells more like sweet straw, it has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-irritant and anti-fungal properties. It has a beautiful deep dark blue colour due to its high chamazulene content making it particularly anti-inflammatory it also contains a high proportion of bisabolol, so it is valuable in treating conditions where there is inflammation present.

Roman Chamomile Essential oil has a light, fresh apple fragrance, although it does contain chamazulene and bisabolol it is composed mainly of esters. It has a yellow-pale blue colour, and is anti-spasmodic, anti-fungal and highly calming. This is widely considered the gentler Chamomile oil, making it ideal for use with babies and young children.

All Chamomiles are soothing, calming and anti-inflammatory, making them an amazing ingredient for Organic skincare.
