Teenage Skin Care Tips

Teenage Skin Care Tips

It is important for teens and young adults to get in the habit of a good skin care routine. The skin care routine you use today will show on your face in years to come. A gentle, cleansing skin care regime is ideal for teenagers as it isn’t harsh but it also prepares the skin for various hormonal changes that it will go through as it gets older. Oily skin, blackheads and acne are more common among teenagers during puberty when hormones cause skin to overproduce sebum. A pimple is simply an infection caused by a pore clogged with sebum that has been invaded with bacteria.
Avoid touching your face with your fingers or leaning your face on objects that collect sebum and skin residue like your phone. Touching your face can spread the bacteria that cause pores to become inflamed and irritated. To keep bacteria at bay, wash your hands before applying anything to your face, such as creams or makeup. When you are sleeping try not to rest your hands on your face as this can transfer excess oil and bacteria and cause spots.
Don't pick at your spots or pop pimples! It’s tempting but this will only spread infection and bacteria to other parts of the face and reinitiate the spot cycle and can even cause scarring.
Many acne products on the market are simply too harsh for sensitive teenage skin! Using them can make the problems even worse. They can be far too drying for the skin and can actually strip the skin of its sebum, skin then goes into overdrive trying to create more sebum, which then leads to further break outs.
Be sure to avoid any product that has mineral oil or petroleum products or chemicals. These will clog your pores and irritate your skin even more. Often the use of salicylic acid is recommended as an antibacterial treatment for acne. However, using strong concentrated solutions of this can cause unwanted darkening of the skin! Keeping your products natural and organic will help restore the balance more quickly. First be patient. It takes some time for your skin to balance. Allow yourself two to three months to regain healthy skin balance.
Lulu & Boo’s gentle yet effective formulas are ideal for teenage skin, bursting with natural, organic plant extracts that work in complete harmony with your skin.
Your Daily Skin Care Routine:

Lulu & Boo Organic Skincare
Now that the Christmas party season is over this is the time of year that we turn our thoughts to what we can do to improve our lives.
If the effects of late night’s, over indulging on rich food, chocolate and alcohol has take its toll on your skin, leaving it looking dull and less than glowing.
Try these simple tips and see how great your skin can look:Out with the Junk Food:Swap the junk food for nutrient rich
organic fruit and veg. Keep it colourful. Brightly coloured foods like carrots, red peppers, broccoli and spinach are nutrient-rich and packed with powerful antioxidants. Challenge yourself to pile on the purple, red, green and orange fruits and veggies.
Eat two daily servings of protein. Protein is Vital for the growth and tissue repair of the body. Lentils, broad beans, quinoa, tofu or one small serving of meat, oily fish or free range eggs are all excellent sources of protein.

Include lots of fibre in your diet. It keeps you regular and enhances the elimination of waste from your body.
Carbohydrates are the main fuel for the body. Swap cakes, biscuits and chocolate for slow releasing carbohydrate, whole-grains, pulses, brown rice, wholegrain pasta, wheat-free pasta fruit & Veg. All are also great forms of fibre.
Essential fatty acids are vital for healthy glowing skin, hair and nails. Inadequate amounts of EFA’s in the diet can result in dry, dull and flaky skin and can lead to dry and brittle hair and nails. Most people are deficient in EFA’s, especially Omega 3. Try adding a combination of cold press oils or seeds to your diet, especially flax, hemp, olive, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower or oily fish such as sardines, mackerel and wild salmon. Or take a good supplement, I like
Organic Omega 3:6:9 Balance Oil, from Higher Nature or
OracOmega 3 Fish oil from Nature’s Best.
I also like to take a good high potency probiotic. Adding healthy bacteria, or probiotics to your diet can support the health of the gut and immune system. They also help you digest and better assimilate the nutrients from your food. That means your skin receives more of the antioxidants, vitamins and minerals it needs to be healthy, giving you a glowing complexion. Probiotics can treat acne ~ One study found that teenagers ingesting probiotics saw improvement in their blemishes after only 2 weeks.
Probiotics can prevent wrinkles ~ Good bacteria in your gut can help you eliminate the toxins and free radicals that can damage skin and cause early signs of aging.
Good supplements to try are:
Nature’s Best Acidophilus Extra and
Higher Nature’s Probio-GestCut out coffee: Coffee is a diuretic. It can cause dehydration of the skin. Drinking coffee can also interfere with a good night's sleep, which is essential for good skin. Replace it with hot water and a squeeze of lemon juice. Lemon is an excellent source of Vitamin C. It helps to cleanse the digestive track and allows food to digest properly. It also wakes up your liver and helps to flush out toxins in the morning. Lemon water can make a huge difference in the appearance of your skin. You will notice your skin coming back to life, skin will look clearer and dark under eye circles will disappear. If you still fancy a cuppa, try green tea, herbal tea or rooibos tea, which are all loaded with antioxidants. I love Rooibos Earl Grey by Dragonfly Tea. It’s really refreshing but can also be drunk before bed as it contains no caffeine.
Banishing the booze:Alcohol puts a big strain on your digestive system and liver. Like coffee it also dehydrates the skin. Regularly consuming a large amount of alcohol, your skin won't be as radiant as it could be. A lot of the body's water is held in the skin so, if you're dehydrated, your skin will age much more quickly than normal, leading to wrinkles appearing much earlier in life than they would otherwise.
If this is impossible for you to completely cut out drinking alcohol, try not to drink it during the months of January and February. This will help to give your liver a rest and when you do drink alcohol make sure you drink a lot of water.
Try taking Milk Thistle before and after the party season. Milk Thistle contains Silymarin, which is an antioxidant that helps to protect the liver. A Good one to try is:
Higher Nature’s Milk Thistle.
Increase your water intake:Water is the key to great skin. It keeps the kidneys functioning well and also aids in eliminating wastes and toxins. It also hydrates and improves moisture levels in your skin, making your skin look hydrated, plump and healthy looking. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water everyday. And I really mean water! Not flavoured water or fizzy carbonated water, just plain still filtered or bottled mineral water. This is the most fundamental thing of all for clear skin. If you don’t drink enough water on a daily basis, all the other tips I have given you for glowing skin will not work.
Exercise:Exercise for at least 30 minutes everyday. Any exercise will do. Anything you enjoy. Walking, jogging, swimming, biking, skipping, gardening, dancing, or Wii Sports. The main idea is to get your heart pumping and blood flowing and to get rid of excess toxins through sweating.
Beauty Sleep: Sleep is crucial for great skin too? According to scientists, those who manage eight hours a night look far more attractive than those who are sleep deprived.
When you sleep you're getting more than rest your body is healing and repairing itself while you sleep.
Smoking: if you smoke, STOP!
Everyone knows that smoking causes many problems and deadly diseases, but it also starves the skin of oxygen and causes premature wrinkles. A number of scientific studies have compared the skin of smokers and non-smokers with alarming results: Smokers have far more wrinkles than non-smokers. Smoking also breaks down elastin and collagen making the skin look thickened and leathery. But it's not just wrinkles that affect smokers' skins. Their faces are often sallow and grey, with more tiny visible blood vessels often known as broken veins on the nose and cheeks. This is because smoking impairs circulation.
Chemicals:Minimize the use of chemical-based household cleansers and beauty products and substitute with natural
organic alternatives. Our skin, the largest organ of the human body, absorbs 60% of the ingredients used in personal care products. Some of the chemicals used are very toxic, and have ingredients that can seriously risk our health, some are even carcinogenic. Making it extremely important that we use chemical free
organic skincare products on our skin.
Give yourself a home facial and hair treatment once a week:Create an atmosphere for unwinding. Slip into your cosiest pyjamas, and play some relaxing music.
- Warm a small amount of Shea & Jojoba Deep Hair Treatment in palm of hand and massage it into dry hair and scalp, wrap hair in a warm towel and leave it on all night (with towel on pillow). The Lavender, Geranium and Cedarwood essential oils in the hair mask will also help you to relax.
- Remove all traces of makeup on your face and eyes by massaging some cleanser into your skin. Using either Calendula Organic Cleansing Milk (suitable for All Skin Types) ~ A Light, creamy cleansing milk with soothing Organic Extracts of Aloe vera, Calendula and Chamomile, Softening Jojoba oil and Impurity Removing Castor oil. Or Chamomile Organic Cleansing Balm (Suitable for Dry &
Mature Skin) ~ With Natural Organic extracts of Chamomile and Calendula and a blend of cleansing plant oils, which soothes, decongests and gently melts all make-up away. Remove Cleanser with a clean damp Muslin cloth.
- Now you're going to cleanse a second time. Gently massage Cleanser over face and neck, this time with an emphasis on a slow, relaxing circular massage. Massage works to soften wrinkles and combat the first signs of fine lines. Remove with a clean damp Muslin cloth.
- Next apply Fruits & Vitamins Brightening Mask (Suitable for Dry & Mature Skin) A rejuvenating, anti-ageing organic mask, packed full of fruit extracts rich in vitamins and minerals. The Active Enzymes in White and Pink Clay stimulate the skin’s circulation, revealing a younger, brighter complexion. Or Seaweed Purifying Mask (Suitable for Problem
& Oily Skin) A deeply purifying organic mask that detoxifies and brightens the complexion. Organic Seaweed helps to oxygenate, tone and revitalise the skin. Both masks contain clay, which will help to draw impurities from the skin and refine pores. They also contain natural enzymes: This is one of the kindest methods of skin exfoliation and can be used on all skin types. Enzymes are extracted from an assortment of sources including papaya (papain), apple, pumpkin, pineapple (bromelain), mango, lactase, and kiwifruit. They stimulate natural exfoliation by dissolving cross-links in the skin, encouraging a rapid turnover and elimination of dead skin cells. Leave mask on for 20 minutes and again remove with a damp muslin cloth.
- Then warm 6 drops of serum in your hands and massage gently into your skin, working from the neck upwards. Frankincense Serum (Suitable for Dry Skin) ~ A deeply nourishing serum, with high levels of Antioxidant and EFA Rich Plant Oils including Rosehip, Macadamia Nut, Pomegranate and Hemp. With Organic extracts of Vitamin A-rich Carrot and Anti-Aging Rosemary.
or Rosehip Face Lifting Serum (Suitable for All skin types) ~ with Cell Regenerative properties of Rosehip Oil, Seabuckthorn Extract, Vitamins A (Beta-carotene) and E and Omega 3 and 6. Also active are Mullien and Pumpkin Seed Oils, which when combined help to lift and revitalise the skin.
- Then follow with your relevant moisturiser:
Almond & Rosehip Face cream ~ Dry Skin
Multi-Vitamin Face Cream ~ Mature & Dry Skin
Safflower & Nettle Face Cream ~ Combination & Oily Skin
Linden Blossom face Cream ~ Normal Skin
- Finish with a small amount of refreshing Aloe & Eyebright Eye Gel ~ Organic Witchhazel, Eyebright and Arnica help reduce puffiness, dark circles and fine lines, whilst Aloe Vera & Apricot Oil add moisture to the delicate eye area.
Using your ring finger, apply one pump of gel around the eye area, patting lightly.
Detox your body with a bath:A home detoxification bath will release toxins and help with circulation and energy. Use our
Vanilla Sugar Body Scrub, it will boost circulation, remove dead skin cells and improve skin tone. Massage using circular movements, especially on cellulite

prone areas. Start from the ankles and work up the body. Rinse away with warm water, then turn the shower to cold for 1 minute then back to warm again. This will further boost circulation and help the detoxification process. Then relax in the warm bath water and slowly breath in the wonderful essential oils from the body scrub. Your skin will be left silky-smooth, and moisturised.
For a revitalising morning bath or shower, try our May Chang, Lime and Blackpepper Bath Soak and Body Wash, with its diuretic and detoxifying properties, which is also effective on cellulite, and a great way to boost your circulation.

Natural Remedies for Hayfever
Monday 13 June 2011
Lulu & Boo Organic Skincare
Unfortunately the hayfever season is well and truly here!
Hayfever is an allergic reaction to pollen. Your body reacts to the airborne allergens by releasing a substance called histamine, which causes inflammation of the membranes lining the nose, throat and sinuses. This increases the production of mucus and causes sinus congestion.
Symptoms are: • blocked or runny nose
• itchy, red and watering eyes
• sneezing
• drowsiness
• headache
• sore or scratchy throat
It is impossible to avoid pollen totally. However, symptoms tend to be less severe if you reduce your exposure to pollen. The following may help when the pollen count is high:
• Stay indoors as much as possible and keep windows and doors shut.
• Avoid cutting grass, large grassy places, and camping.
• Shower and wash your hair after being outdoors, especially after going to the countryside.
• Keep car windows closed and consider buying a pollen filter for the air vents in your car. These should be changed at every service.
Natural RemediesHoney ~ This is something that needs to be done before the allergy season but works extremely well. It is as simple as eating some natural raw honey regularly throughout the year. By doing this you will build immunity and stop your body over-reacting to the pollen released in summer. Not just any old honey will do, however. It has to be raw honey and ideally locally produced too. Raw honey is unprocessed and at this stage it still contains pollen, honeycomb and live enzymes. If you ingest this throughout the year, your body is less prone to react badly to pollen when spring arrives. Start adding raw honey to your toast, porridge or tea to start reaping the benefits.
Nettle Tea ~ is a natural anti-histamine. Nettles are also believed to lessen the effects of hay-fever by boosting the body’s defence against pollen. Nettle tea is the best way to consume and receive the positive benefits. You could add a tea-spoon of raw locally produced honey to a cup for a double boost.
Butterbur ~ is a plant that looks a bit like Rhubarb. It is thought to work in a similar way to allergy medications by blocking the action of histamine and leukotrienes, inflammatory chemicals involved in allergic reactions. It is not just allergies that can be soothed by this plant however but migraines too. Butterbur is often available as tea, which is a tasty way to consume it. Alternatively there are butterbur pills available.
Onions ~ Have been shown to help boost the immune system and this can help with hayfever, Remember Hayfever is a result of an over-reacting immune system. The reason onions can help is that they contain the chemical quercetin. Plus you can add them to all kinds of foods. I like to eat them on salad or just with sliced up tomatoes. Definitely worth a try!
Line the Nose ~ With a barrier ointment or cream. This will stop the pollen from getting into the body through the nose and a
good layer in the morning usually keeps you going until lunch, just wash out and re-apply if need be. This is especially useful if you are spending a day outdoors or when you know there is going to be a high pollen count.
Recommended Product ~
Calendula Ointment not only will this act as a barrier but will also help to soothe sore nostrils.
Vitamin C ~ is an antioxidant that has natural antihistamine properties. So eat plenty of fruit and veg. Most people think citrus fruit as being the best source of vitamin C. Although they are a great source. Here are some fruit and veg, which are full of vitamin C: Brocoli, kiwi fruit, Strawberries, Cranberries, Papaya, Mango, Spinach, Celery, Peppers, especially red, orange and yellow. There are also vitamin C tablets available that can be chewed on during the day.
Sore, Puffy, Itchy Eyes
Chamomile tea ~ is also a good remedy for sore itchy eyes. Simply get a cup of warm water and a teabag of chamomile tea and soak this tea the way you usually do with teas. Cool the tea bags and liquid in the fridge. Use the liquid on your eyes as a wash to help relieve the itchiness and the redness. You can also use the moist teabag over your eyes to help ease the itch and to soothe your eyes.
Frozen Cucumber Slices ~ Put a couple of cucumber slices in a zip lock bag in the freezer. Make sure you only put a few in each one so they'll lay flat and not freeze all clumped together. (I only put 2 in each small bag at a time) Next time your eyes are feeling sore and itchy. Pop to your freezer for one of your bags of cucumber slices. Let them thaw a little. Then, just lean back and relax and place the slices over your eyes. For added relief, place a cool, folded wash cloth over your eyes and cucumber slices. You will love how refreshing the cucumber is to your sore, itchy eyes!
Recommended Product ~ Aloe & Eyebright Eye Gel is a beautifully light cooling gel that soothes tired, sensitive eyes.
Keep this wonderfully cooling eye gel in your bag over the summer months and apply during the day to help calm itchy, sore, puffy eyes.
Key Ingredients:Arnica Extract ~ It is a natural herb which is well known for its use in eye care products as it can help reduce puffiness and dark circles.
Eyebright Extract ~ is an excellent herb for the eye area. It has been used for centuries to help with eye problems such as conjunctivitis, sensitivity to light, stinging and weeping eyes, and much more. It is naturally high in zinc, which helps care and protect the delicate skin around the eyes. Due to its astringent, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, it tightens and reduces puffiness. In combination with Arnica it is very effective at helping to reduce puffiness around the eyes. It is rich in vitamins A and C, flavonoids, and tannins.
Witch Hazel ~ A
natural astringent, with anti-inflammatory properties. It tones the skin and reduces puffiness.
Aloe Vera ~ Helps rehydrate and soothe the skin and has an amazing cooling, calming and uplifting effect.
Apricot Oil ~ This is a mild oil, tolerated by most people, especially those with sensitive, inflamed, dry or mature skin. It enhances skin elasticity.

How do I apply a Serum?
Sunday 13 March 2011
Lulu & Boo Organic Skincare
People get very confused about using serums. I often get asked when should I apply my serum? Should I only use it a night? Should it go on top or under my moisturiser? I thought it was time I cleared all the confusion by giving some advice on how and why we should be using serums.
A good serum should be packed full of antioxidants to help defend and repair the skin. Providing intensive care to treat problem or fragile areas. Its aim is to penetrate deep into the three layers of the skin to strengthen the cells as well as deliver active ingredients to your skin. A moisturiser only helps with the superficial layers of the skin by retaining moisture on the surface of the skin and preventing it from evaporating, a good face serum will actually help your moisturiser to penetrate deeper and provide effective hydration.
I recommend apply a serum twice a day. It is vital that all serums go onto the skin first after cleansing and toning. The main reason to use a facial serum first is to get added nutrients into deeper layers of your skin. You should apply it on a toner damp skin, this helps to lock in moisture. Wait at least 5 minutes until the serum is fully absorbed before applying your moisturiser. By layering your moisturiser on top, this helps to seal and magnify the benefits of the serum. A great tip is to keep your moisturiser in the fridge. When your moisturiser is applied cold, it pushes blood away from the skin and in the process it creates a vacuum effect to pull the potent serum ingredients deeper within the skin.
The regular use of a facial serum can absolutely help you revitalize your face and make it more younger looking.

Winter-proof your skin
Saturday 05 February 2011

Winter can wreak havoc on our complexions - Our hands, faces, hair and bodies can all suffer. After months of cold spells and central heating, many of us are left with skin that feels dry, tight and uncomfortable. Skin is stripped of its
natural moisture by wind, central heating and low humidity. Even people who don't normally have dry skin can find the winter months a problem. Another cause is drinking less water, as people are less thirsty in winter. This causes the skin to dehydrate.
CLEANSEHarsh chemicals, hot water and detergents can all aggravate dry skin.
People who have particularly dry skin, or conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, should look for alternatives to harsh face washes and detergents.
Washing with strong detergents removes more oil from the skin's protective fats and in cases where skin is already dry, can dry it out even further.
This can be a particular problem with hand dryness. If you regularly wash your hands with strong detergents and hot water, you'll make them worse. The same applies to the skin of your body. If you have lots of hot baths or showers, this tends to remove some of the protective lipids from your skin.
WHAT TO DO:• use a gentle
organic cleansing balms, creams or milks
• reduce the heat of your bath or shower
• cut out any excessive washing with strong detergents, particularly excessive hand washing
• avoid harsh products, such as alcohol-based cleansers.
• When washing hands or bathing use natural soap made using the traditional cold process method, which re

tains the natural glycerin of the oils.

MOISTURISEIt sounds obvious, but how many people still forget to apply moisturiser when their skin most needs it? This is extremely important in order to keep moisture levels of the skin, balanced. Most women use a facial moisturiser. However, many aren’t as disciplined about caring for the rest of their bodies including the hands, arms, legs and feet. Remember to moisturise from head to toe!
WHAT TO DO:• Layer your skin with hydrating
organic serum or oil under your
organic moisturiser. That will allow the moisture to penetrate deep into the cells, nourishing the skin.
• Apply a rich body lotion or cream over your whole body immediately after the shower to seal in the moisture. This increases the water content of the skin’s outer layers and gives it a soft, moist look. Re-apply hand creams after hand washing

EXFOLIATION
Dead skin cells can build up in the winter months. Exfoliating is very important at any time of the year. But during winter when your skin is feeling sensitive and dry, it's more important than ever to keep your skin soft. Plus, applying moisturiser straight on to un-exfoliated dry skin will prevent your moisturiser from absorbing fully
WHAT TO DO:• Prep your skin for moisturising by using a gentle scrub, mask or a muslin cloth. A face scrub or mask can be used once or twice a week.
• A muslin cloth can be used daily with your cleanser. Don't overdo it, though. Over-enthusiastic scrubbing can undermine the skin's barrier function.
• Using a mask, that contains natural enzymes: This is one of the kindest methods of skin exfoliation and can be used on all skin types. Enzymes are extracted from an assortment of sources including papaya (papain), pumpkin, pineapple (bromelain), mango (magneferin, katechol oxidase, lactase), kiwifruit. They stimulate natural exfoliation by dissolving cross-links in the skin, encouraging a rapid turnover and elimination of dead skin cells.

Vanilla Sugar Body ScrubHUMIDITYA major contributing factor to winter dryness to skin and hair is low humidity, caused by cold winds and overheated homes and offices. One idea is to leave bowls of water near radiators.
If your central heating is making your home dry, you can always use a humidifier, or avoid cranking up the central heating to full blast – knitwear is far kinder to skin (and the environment).
FOODS THAT NOURISHConsuming the right nutrients will only add to your general health, and will give your skin a boost.
A poor diet lacking in essential vitamins and minerals will show signs, such as flaky skin.
What to do:
• Include important vitamins in your diet, such as A, C, D, E. These can be found in a range of fruits, vegetables and daily products.
• Try to eat a balanced diet. Essential fatty acids such omega 3 are good for general health, and may help play a role in supporting the skin. The best source of Omega 3 in the diet are:
Oily fish, such as salmon, mackerel, fresh tuna, sardines and herring.
Flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, soybeans, soybean oil, Walnuts, Brazil nuts, Soy nuts Olive oil, Hemp seeds and Pumpkin seeds
• Supplements, such as evening primrose oil and fish oils are extremely beneficial to the skin.
• Remember: drinking too much alcohol and coffee both dehydrate the skin.
EXERCISEExercise helps produce sweat and increases blood flow to the skin, which improves the skin’s hydration
